Xin Xin Ming (Faith in Mind)

“The Supreme Way is not difficult
If only you do not pick and choose.
Neither love nor hate,
And you will clearly understand.
Be off by a hair,
And you are as far from it as heaven and earth.”

If you are, or have been, a Zen practitioner, chances are that you have heard a teacher quote the above stanza from one of Zen’s most cherished poems. As human beings we tend to spend our life picking and choosing this or that in a vain attempt to make life fit our demands for comfort and pleasure. When we insist on life being anything other than what it is in any given moment we separate from the reality of this moment and we suffer and increase the suffering of others as well.
In his poem, “Faith in MInd”, the third Chan patriarch, Seng Ts’an, simply and beautifully
exposes our habit of seeing our clouds of thoughts and opinions, this or that, good or bad, as the “holders” of the truth of this life. Seng Ts’an introduces and invites us to realize the boundless sky of “The way”, “the Dharma Realm of true Suchness”
